“I just need to think.”
“About what?”
“This.”
“This! funny.”
“Why?”
“Because, obviously, you think it’s a big deal. When it’s only a big deal for me, and I don’t care.”
“You do.”
“What?”
“You do care, or you’d just let me walk and think and leave me alone.”
“Ha!”
“Leave me alone please. In a nice way. Like I’m ok if I have time to think and don’t need to work anything out with you. Ok?”
“Right. So, I’ll just sit down by the side of the road here and watch you disappear into the sunset.”
He sits.
She walks.
The cafe. An hour later.
“Going?”
“I’ve had my drink.”
“Yeah!”
“Are you having one?”
“Are you?”
“I’ve had one.”
“Another?”
“No.”
“Will you stay while I have one?”
“I don’t know.”
He gets a drink.
She walks.
He leaves his drink.
The road. Twenty minutes later.
“You caught me up.”
“You walk slow.”
“You drink fast.”
“So?”
“I’m in the zone.”
“What again?”
“I’m in the zone walking. I just want to walk and think.”
“Think!”
“You should try it!”
“I do. You don’t want to know what I’m thinking.” He walks on very fast.
She stops, looks around. Looks back. But goes on.
Later.
The hostel kitchen.
“Do you have any food?”
“No, I forgot. I thought I might look for somewhere.”
“There isn’t anywhere. Do you want some of mine? I’ve made tons.”
“No, I couldn’t.’
“You can. All that thinking needs energy.”
“You’re funny.”
“I like to be.”
“Yeah, just be funny. Like you were. ‘ ‘
“I’ll be funny if you stop thinking.”
“Thinking about your girlfriend?”
“Or about your boyfriend!”
“I can’t think about much else.”
“Great!”
“I meant think about not thinking about him. You see?”
“Yeah, I do.”
“So?”
“Did you get us another private room?”
“Of course I did.”
She laughs. “Bastard!”
He laughs. “Dinner’s ready.”
They eat in silence, playing footsie below the table.
Then go to bed and leave thinking and arguing and understanding themselves for another day.
